What is Bitcoin halving?

halving

Halving from the English “to halve” is cut in two. This is an algorithm for gradually reducing the reward for mining new bitcoins by half. This happens once every 4 years; the first halving occurred in 2012. Then the reward decreased from 50 to 25 BTC.

Today, miners can get 6.25 for mining. And in 2024, the reward will decrease to 3,125 BTC.

Why do we need halving?

This algorithm was invented and implemented by Satoshi Nakamoto to gradually slow down the bitcoin mining speed. Since mining is the only way to create new coins, halving reduces the size of the reward for it. As a result, bitcoins appear slower, and with each division, more and more time is needed for the “birth” of one coin.

Why slow down Bitcoin mining?

The fact is that the creator initially laid down a limited BTC issue of 21 million. This is done to avoid inflation. If bitcoins were mined simultaneously, the coin would quickly depreciate.

Thanks to halving, the last bitcoin will be able to be mined as far back as 2140.
