Tether launches on Avalanche blockchain

Tether launches on Avalanche blockchain

USDT is expected to launch on the Avalanche network in mid-June, according to Tether’s CTO, Paolo Ardoino. Once launched, the stablecoin will run on nine blockchains: Algorand, Avalanche, Simple Ledger Protocol Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, EOS, Liquid Network, Omni, Tron, and Solana.

Ethereum’s high gas charges have made USDT more popular on other networks, such as Tron. As recently reported, USDT’s supply on Tron has exceeded that of Ethereum. This is still relevant at the time of writing. According to The Block’s data management dashboard, USDT’s supply on Tron is $31 billion, while Ethereum’s is around $27 billion.

Ardoino told The Block that if Ethereum’s average gas fee remains high, the trend could continue.

“Avalanche is growing in popularity,” Ardoino said. “It supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which makes it easy to port decentralized finance (DeFi) projects to it to get lower fees, and also makes it easier to deploy USDT since we already have a battle-tested EVM-compatible setup.”

When asked if Tether plans to support more blockchains in the near future, Ardoino said that there are currently no other blockchains in development.
